Baldwin IV of Jerusalem

1161–1185 · 12th century · Also known as Leper King

Baldwin IV, known as the Leper King, was king of Jerusalem from 1174. Although he suffered from leprosy from childhood, he led his army in person and defeated Saladin at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177. His illness and the factional struggles over the regency and succession weakened the kingdom in the years before its defeat at Hattin in 1187.
