Palk Strait

The Palk Strait is a shallow strait between Tamil Nadu in India and the Jaffna peninsula of northern Sri Lanka, linking the Bay of Bengal with Palk Bay. To its south the chain of shoals called Adam's Bridge or Rama Setu runs from Rameswaram island to Mannar. Named after Robert Palk, an 18th-century governor of Madras, it has long been a route for fishing, pearling and migration between the two lands.
