Parthenope (city)
Parthenope was a Greek settlement founded by colonists from Cumae on the Bay of Naples, probably in the 7th century BCE, and named after a Siren whose tomb was shown there. When Neapolis, the 'new city', was founded nearby around 470 BCE, the older town became known as Palaepolis, the 'old city'. Both were absorbed into Naples, which is still poetically called Parthenope.
