Paul Holle

Paul Holle was a French colonial officer from Saint-Louis in Senegal who commanded the fort at Médine on the upper Senegal River. In 1857, with a small garrison and the people of King Juka Sambala, he held the fort for three months against the army of El Hadj Umar Tall until Governor Louis Faidherbe arrived with relief. His defence became a celebrated episode of French colonial history.
