Paxbolon-Maldonado Papers

early 17th century · 17th century

The Paxbolon-Maldonado Papers are a collection of colonial documents from Campeche, Mexico, that include a rare text in the Chontal Maya language written in the early 17th century for Pablo Paxbolon, a descendant of the rulers of Acalan. They trace the dynasty back to the 14th century and describe Acalan's encounter with Cortés in 1525, making them the main source for the Chontal state.
