Peace of Nicias

421 BCE · 5th century BCE · Part of the Peloponnesian War

The Peace of Nicias was a treaty between Athens and Sparta concluded in the spring of 421 BCE, ending the first phase of the Peloponnesian War, known as the Archidamian War. Named after the Athenian general Nicias who negotiated it, it was meant to last fifty years and provided for the exchange of prisoners and captured places, but several allies refused it, and open war resumed by 414 BCE.
