Pekah

r. c. 740–732 BCE · 8th century BCE · Also known as Pekah of Israel

Pekah was king of Israel from about 740 to 732 BCE, an army officer who seized the throne by killing Pekahiah. Allied with Rezin of Damascus, he tried to force Judah into an anti-Assyrian coalition, but Tiglath-pileser III invaded, annexed Galilee and Gilead and deported part of the population. Pekah was then killed by Hoshea, who submitted to Assyria.
