Pepin of Italy

777–810 · 8th century · Also known as Pippin of Italy

Pepin of Italy was a son of Charlemagne, born Carloman, who was crowned king of Italy in 781 to rule the conquered Lombard kingdom. He campaigned against the Avars and the Duchy of Benevento. In 810 he attacked the Venetian lagoon, and his failure to take the islands helped move the seat of Venetian government to the Rialto. He died later that year.
