Rialto
The Rialto is the central island group and district of Venice on the Grand Canal, where the seat of government moved in the early 9th century after Pepin of Italy's attack in 810. It became Venice's commercial heart, with its market, banks and merchants' meeting places. The Rialto Bridge, completed in stone in 1591, was for centuries the only bridge across the Grand Canal.
