Paolo Lucio Anafesto

traditionally 697–717 · 8th century

Paolo Lucio Anafesto is, according to Venetian tradition, the first Doge of Venice, elected in 697 by the lagoon communities under Byzantine overlordship. Later chronicles credit him with an agreement with the Lombard king Liutprand fixing the borders of the Venetian territory. Many historians doubt that he existed, and Orso Ipato, elected in 726, is the first doge securely attested.
