Pharasmanes of Khwarazm

4th century BCE · 4th century BCE

Pharasmanes was a king of Khwarazm (Chorasmia) in the late 4th century BCE, known from the historian Arrian. In the winter of 329–328 BCE he came to Alexander the Great at Bactra with 1,500 horsemen, offered an alliance and proposed a joint campaign towards the Black Sea; Alexander declined but made a treaty of friendship. His visit shows that Khwarazm was then independent of Persian rule.
