Phintias of Acragas

d. c. 279 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Phintias was tyrant of Acragas, modern Agrigento, in Sicily in the early 3rd century BCE. In the disorder after the death of Agathocles of Syracuse he extended his power over neighbouring cities, and around 282 BCE he destroyed Gela and moved its people to a new city named after himself, at modern Licata. His harsh rule provoked revolts, and he was defeated by Hicetas of Syracuse.
