Sicels
The Sicels were an ancient people of eastern Sicily, who gave the island its name. They lived in hill towns of the interior when Greek colonists arrived in the 8th century BCE, and were gradually Hellenised by cities such as Syracuse, Catana and Gela. In the mid-5th century BCE Ducetius united many Sicel towns in a short-lived league against the Greeks.
