Pierre Poivre

1719–1786 · 18th century

Pierre Poivre was a French horticulturist and administrator who served as intendant of the Isle de France (Mauritius) and Bourbon from 1767 to 1772. He smuggled clove and nutmeg plants out of the Dutch-controlled Moluccas to break the Dutch spice monopoly, and developed the Pamplemousses garden near Port Louis into a centre for acclimatising tropical plants.
