Place des Vosges

1605–1612 · 17th century · Also known as Place Royale

The Place des Vosges is a square in the Marais district of Paris, built between 1605 and 1612 on the orders of Henry IV and originally called the Place Royale. Surrounded by uniform houses of brick and stone above arcades, it is the oldest planned square in Paris and a model for later royal squares in France and Europe. It took its present name in 1800.
