Platonic Academy

c. 387 BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Academy of Plato

The Academy was the school founded by Plato in Athens around 387 BCE, in a grove sacred to the hero Akademos outside the city walls. Aristotle studied there for twenty years, and under later heads it turned towards scepticism. It was badly damaged when Sulla besieged Athens in 86 BCE, though Platonist teaching in the city continued until the Neoplatonic school was closed in 529 CE.
