Plombières Agreement

1858 · 19th century · Part of the Second Italian War of Independence

The Plombières Agreement was a secret understanding reached on 21 July 1858 by Napoleon III and Cavour at the spa town of Plombières-les-Bains in France. France promised to help the Kingdom of Sardinia in a war against Austria provoked by Austria, in return for Savoy and Nice, and a marriage was arranged between Victor Emmanuel II's daughter Clotilde and Prince Napoléon. It led to the war of 1859.
