Second Italian War of Independence

1859 · 19th century

The Second Italian War of Independence was fought in 1859 by France and the Kingdom of Sardinia against the Austrian Empire. Austrian defeats at Magenta and Solferino led to the loss of Lombardy. Accounts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire place it among the defeats that pushed the Habsburg monarchy towards the reforms and compromise that created Austria-Hungary.
