Polans (western)
The Polans were a West Slavic tribe of Greater Poland, in the basin of the Warta river around Gniezno and Poznań. In the 10th century their Piast rulers, beginning with Mieszko I, united the neighbouring tribes into the Polish state, which took its name from them. They are distinct from the East Slavic Polans of the middle Dnieper around Kiev.
