Porta all'Arco
The Porta all'Arco is an arched gate in the walls of Volterra, Tuscany, built of large stone blocks when the Etruscan city of Velathri was fortified in the 4th century BCE, with its arch rebuilt in the 1st century BCE. Three weathered stone heads set in its outer face are thought to represent gods or guardian figures. In 1944 citizens saved it from German demolition by blocking it with paving stones.
