Porus

d. c. 317 BCE · 4th century BCE

Porus was an Indian king who ruled the land between the Jhelum and Chenab rivers in the Punjab. In 326 BCE he fought Alexander the Great at the Battle of the Hydaspes with a large army including war elephants, and was defeated. Impressed by his bearing, Alexander restored him to his kingdom and enlarged it. He was murdered by the Macedonian officer Eudemus around 317 BCE.
