Pradyota dynasty

6th–5th century BCE · 6th century BCE

The Pradyota dynasty ruled the kingdom of Avanti, centred on Ujjain in western India, in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. Puranic tradition says it came to power when the minister Pulika killed the last king of an older line and installed his son Pradyota. Its best-known ruler, Chanda Pradyota Mahasena, was a contemporary of the Buddha. Avanti was later conquered by the Shishunaga dynasty of Magadha.
