Pradyota

6th–5th century BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Pradyota Mahasena, Chanda Pradyota

Chanda Pradyota, also called Mahasena, was king of Avanti, ruling from Ujjain in the time of the Buddha. Buddhist and Jain texts remember him as powerful and violent: he is said to have threatened Rajagriha, capital of Magadha, and to have fought Udayana of Vatsa, who eloped with his daughter Vasavadatta. His dynasty lost Avanti when it was conquered by Magadha.
