Proconsul

Also known as proconsuls

A proconsul was a Roman official who exercised the authority of a consul outside Rome, usually as governor of a province. Under the Roman Empire, senatorial provinces were governed by proconsuls, nominally under the Senate's control. Imperial provinces, by contrast, were governed by legates appointed by the emperor.
