309–246 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Ptolemy II Philadelphus was king of Egypt from 283 to 246 BCE, born on Kos. He expanded the Library and Museum of Alexandria and extended Ptolemaic power through the Aegean, where the Nesiotic League honoured him, and on Cyprus, where he refounded Marion as Arsinoe. He eventually made peace with his half-brother Magas of Cyrene.
