Quanzhen School

1160s– · 12th century · Also known as Complete Perfection, Quanzhen Daoism

The Quanzhen (Complete Perfection) School is a branch of Daoism founded by Wang Chongyang in northern China under the Jin dynasty in the 1160s. Drawing on Buddhism and Confucianism, it stressed celibacy, monastic life, meditation and inner alchemy. Its leader Qiu Chuji met Genghis Khan in 1222, and with the Mongols' favour it spread widely. With headquarters at the White Cloud Temple in Beijing, it is one of the two main branches of Daoism.
