Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus

fl. 123 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Also known as Metellus Balearicus

Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus was a Roman consul of 123 BCE who conquered the Balearic Islands, whose people were accused of harbouring pirates. He settled Roman colonists from Iberia there and founded the towns of Palma and Pollentia on Mallorca, earning the surname Balearicus. His conquest began the Romanisation of the islands and the decline of their Talaiotic culture.
