Qvarqvare II Jaqeli

d. 1498 · 15th century · Also known as Qvarqvare II of Samtskhe

Qvarqvare II Jaqeli was atabeg of Samtskhe, a principality in south-western Georgia, from 1451 to 1498. Seeking independence from the Georgian crown, he captured King George VIII in 1465, which helped bring about the break-up of the united Kingdom of Georgia. He then supported rival claimants to keep the kings weak and made Samtskhe virtually independent.
