Ratsimilaho

c. 1694–1750 · 18th century

Ratsimilaho was the founder of the Betsimisaraka confederation on the east coast of Madagascar. The son of the English pirate Thomas White and a Malagasy princess, he united the northern coastal clans against the Tsikoa around 1712 and ruled as king from Fenoarivo until his death in 1750. His daughter Bety, through her French husband, ceded Île Sainte-Marie to France that year.
