Rattlesnake Disk

c. 1300 · 14th century

The Rattlesnake Disk is a round sandstone palette found at Moundville in Alabama in 1883. Engraved with an open hand bearing an eye, encircled by two knotted horned rattlesnakes, it is one of the best-known objects of the Mississippian culture's religious art. Such palettes were probably used to mix pigments for ritual purposes.
