Razakars (Hyderabad)

1946–1948 · 20th century

The Razakars were a paramilitary force of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in Hyderabad State, led by Qasim Razvi, that opposed the state's accession to India. In 1947-1948 they carried out attacks on Hindus and on opponents of the Nizam's regime. Their violence was one reason for India's military action, Operation Polo, in September 1948, after which they were disbanded.
