Real Felipe Fortress

1747–1774 · 18th century

The Real Felipe Fortress is a large pentagonal fortress at Callao, the port of Lima, built by the Spanish between 1747 and 1774 after the earthquake and tsunami of 1746 destroyed the town. Named after Philip V, it was the main defence of the coast of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Royalist troops held it until January 1826, among the last Spanish strongholds in South America; it now houses a military museum.
