Real Audiencia of Quito

1563–1822 · 16th century · Also known as Presidency of Quito

The Real Audiencia of Quito was a Spanish colonial court and administrative unit created in 1563, covering most of present-day Ecuador and parts of southern Colombia and northern Peru. It belonged first to the Viceroyalty of Peru and from 1739 to New Granada. Ecuador later claimed its territory, including vast Amazonian lands, as the basis of its borders.
