Red Cloud

c. 1822–1909 · 19th century · Also known as Maȟpíya Lúta

Red Cloud, Maȟpíya Lúta in Lakota, was a leader of the Oglala Lakota from 1865 to 1909. He led the Lakota to victory over the United States Army in Red Cloud's War, whose largest action, the Fetterman Fight of 1866, killed 81 American soldiers. After signing the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868 he led his people through the transition to reservation life. Some of his opponents wrongly took him for the overall leader of the Sioux, whose divisions were highly decentralised, with bands acting on their own under leaders respected as warriors, as he was.
