Republican Party (Brazil)

founded 1869 · 19th century · Also known as Republican Party

The Republican Party of Brazil was a political movement founded in 1869 that campaigned for the replacement of the monarchy with a republic. Growing steadily through the 1880s, it attracted much of the landowning elite of São Paulo and offered an organised political alternative to imperial rule. Accounts of the Brazilian Empire identify it as one of the forces that made the monarchy's overthrow in 1889 possible.
