Republican Manifesto

1870 · 19th century

The Republican Manifesto was a declaration published in Rio de Janeiro on 3 December 1870 in the first issue of the newspaper A República, launching an organised republican movement in the Brazilian Empire. Drafted largely by the journalist Quintino Bocaiúva and signed by members of the new Republican Club, it attacked the monarchy and called for a federal republic. It was followed by the founding of republican parties, most importantly in São Paulo in 1873.
