Revolution of Ayutla

1854–1855 · 19th century

The Revolution of Ayutla was a liberal uprising in Mexico against the dictatorship of Antonio López de Santa Anna, launched in March 1854 under the Plan of Ayutla, proclaimed in Guerrero with the backing of Juan Álvarez and Ignacio Comonfort. The revolt spread across the country, and Santa Anna left for exile in August 1855. Its victory brought liberals such as Benito Juárez and Miguel Lerdo de Tejada to power and opened the period of La Reforma.
