Richard Squires

1880–1940 · 20th century

Sir Richard Squires was Prime Minister of Newfoundland from 1919 to 1923 and from 1928 to 1932. His governments were dogged by allegations of corruption, and in April 1932, during the Great Depression, a crowd protesting against him stormed the Colonial Building in St John's. He lost the election that year, and in 1934 the dominion gave up self-government.
