Beaumont-Hamel

Beaumont-Hamel is a village in the Somme department of northern France. On 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the Newfoundland Regiment attacked near the village and was almost wiped out in half an hour: of some 800 men who went forward, only 68 answered the roll call the next morning. The site is preserved as the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, and 1 July is Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.
