Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is the capital of the US state of Virginia, on the James River. It was the capital of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865 and its main industrial centre, with the Tredegar Iron Works. Repeated Union campaigns aimed to take it, and its fall in April 1865 led directly to Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
