Rijeka

Also known as Fiume

Rijeka, Italian Fiume, is a port city in Croatia on the Kvarner Gulf of the Adriatic. Hungary's main port under the Habsburgs, it was disputed between Italy and Yugoslavia after the First World War, occupied by D'Annunzio in 1919, made a free state in 1920 and annexed by Italy in 1924. After the Second World War it passed to Yugoslavia and most Italians left.
