Robert Henry Clarence

1872–1908 · 19th century

Robert Henry Clarence was the last hereditary chief of the Mosquito Reserve on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. In 1894 Nicaraguan forces under José Santos Zelaya occupied Bluefields and incorporated the reserve as the department of Zelaya. Clarence fled to Jamaica, where he lived in exile, and Britain recognised Nicaraguan sovereignty over the coast in 1905.
