Roger I was a Norman adventurer of the Hauteville family, youngest brother of Robert Guiscard, who conquered Sicily from its Muslim rulers. He crossed the Strait of Messina in 1061, took Palermo with Robert in 1072 and completed the conquest in 1091, ruling as Count of Sicily. He governed a mixed Greek, Arab and Latin population with tolerance, and his son Roger II became the first King of Sicily.
