Rusafa
Rusafa, called Sergiopolis in late antiquity, is a ruined city in the Syrian desert south of the Euphrates. It grew around the shrine of the soldier-martyr Saint Sergius, a major pilgrimage centre for Arab Christians, and the Ghassanid king al-Mundhir built an audience hall outside its walls. The Umayyad caliph Hisham made it his residence in the 8th century.
