Saarbrücken
Saarbrücken is the capital of the German state of Saarland, on the Saar river near the French border. Seat of medieval counts, it passed in the 14th century to a line of the House of Nassau, whose 18th-century princes made it a baroque residence with the Ludwigskirche. A centre of coal and iron in the industrial age, it went to Prussia in 1815 and shared the Saar's 20th-century changes between German and French control.
