Saarland
The Saarland is a state of south-western Germany bordering France and Luxembourg, with its capital at Saarbrücken. Formed as the Territory of the Saar Basin under League of Nations administration in 1920, it voted to return to Germany in 1935, came under French control after 1945 and joined West Germany in 1957 after a referendum. Its economy long rested on coal and steel.
