West Germany

1949–1990 · 20th century · Also known as Bonn Republic

West Germany was the common English name for the Federal Republic of Germany between its foundation in 1949 and German reunification in 1990. Formed from the American, British and French occupation zones with Bonn as its capital, it became a parliamentary democracy and a member of NATO and the European Economic Community. Its rapid post-war recovery became known as the Wirtschaftswunder, or economic miracle.
