Sacra Infermeria

1574 · 16th century · Also known as Holy Infirmary

The Sacra Infermeria was the great hospital of the Knights Hospitaller in Valletta, Malta, begun in 1574 under Grand Master Jean de la Cassière. It was one of the largest and best-equipped hospitals in early modern Europe, with a long ward for hundreds of patients, who were served on silver plates. The building now houses the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
