Sacro Catino

1101 · 12th century

The Sacro Catino is a green hexagonal dish kept in the treasury of San Lorenzo Cathedral in Genoa. Genoese crusaders brought it back from the capture of Caesarea in 1101, believing it to be carved from a single emerald, and it was later identified with the Holy Grail. It was broken when returned from Paris after Napoleon's troops had taken it there, and it proved to be made of glass.
