Saint Nicholas

4th century · 4th century · Also known as Nicholas of Myra, Nicholas of Bari

Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century bishop of Myra in Lycia, in present-day Turkey, venerated across Eastern and Western Christianity as a wonder-worker and patron of sailors and children. In 1087 merchants from Bari carried his relics from Myra to their city, where the Basilica of Saint Nicholas was built to house them. The shrine made Bari one of the great pilgrimage centres of medieval Europe.
